Australia is the land of the pouched mammals (marsupials).
The best known Australian animal is obviously the kangaroo. In contrast
with koalas there are lots of kangaroos in Australia and it's quite easy
to see them in the wild. But don't forget kangaroos are most active after
dusk, and they're usually sleeping during the day. If wild kangaroo's see
people they'll usually run away....be very careful driving a car at sunset,
Kangaroos make a terrible mess if they hit your car (which happens quite
a lot !!).
It's much easier to approach an animal used to seeing people, for example
on the golf course at Angelsea. |

The Koala is another recognised symbol of Australia.
It's difficult to take koala pictures because they sleep 20 hours a day.
(and they are permanently sleepy because of the chemicals in the Gum leaves).

Wombat looks a like a little pig. Wombats eat roots, shoots and leaves.
Similar to koalas, wombats have an extraordinarily slow metabolism, which makes them generally a flegmatic and a slow moving animal. When required, however, they can reach up to 40 km/h.
