It is hard to imagine Sydney without the Opera House, yet until 1958 on Bennelong Point there was just an ordinary tram depot.
Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect - Jorn Utzon. Probably, this design was beyond the capabilities of engineering of the time.
It was estimated, the Opera will be build in 4 years at cost of 7 million Australian dollars. In fact, it takes 14 years, from 1959 to 1973 to build it. Final cost was 102 million.
Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1973.
